Guru Arjan Dev
Guru Arjan Dev (1563-1606) was the fifth of the Ten Gurus of Sikhism.
He was born in Goindval, Punjab. He was the youngest son of Guru Ram Das and Bibi Bhani, the daughter of Guru Amar Das.
He became the fifth Guru on 16 September, 1581.
The Basics of the new religion had been defined by Baba Nanak, and the groundwork was carried out by three of his successors. Guru Arjan Dev set upon a mission of putting it on a solid footing.
The preparation of the Holy Book (now Guru Granth Sahib) is the most valuable achievement of Guru Arjan Dev. The Guru contributed a total of 2218 hymns to Sri Guru Granth Sahib. He built the Golden Temple - and invited Mian Mir, a Muslim Saint from Lahore to lay the cornerstone of the foundation of the Harmandar Sahib, i.e., the present Golden Temple.
The Guru was imprisoned and excessively tortured by the Moghul ruler - Jehangir. His body was exposed in the scorching heat of May-June sun. He was made to sit on the red-hot sand, and boiling hot water was poured on his naked body. He passed away a few days later.
Later years
Guru Ji nominated Guru Hargobind, his son as the next Guru of the Sikhs.
