Question 3.23
NCERT Class XI Chemistry

How would you react to the statement that the electronegativity of N on Pauling scale is 3.0 in all the nitrogen compounds?

Solution in Detail
(video solution below this)

Electronegativity is defined as the ability of an element in a molecule to attract the electron cloud to itself.

It depends on the chemical environment - from molecule to molecule.

Case 1: In ammonia NH3 molecule the electron cloud is attracted to the nitrogen atom.

Case 2: In nitrogen trifloride NF3 the electron cloud is attracted away from the nitrogen atom.

Case 3: In difluoroamine NHF2 the electron cloud is attracted by more electronegative florine atoms.

Conclusion: from the above examples we can conclude that the electronegativity of nitrogen is different in all the three cases!
