Question 2.10
NCERT Class XI Physics
State the number of significant figures in the following : (a) 0.007 m2 (b) 2.64 × 1024 kg (c) 0.2370 g cm-3 (d) 6.320 J (e) 6.032 N m-2 (f) 0.0006032 m2
Solution
Remember: Starting zeroes are NEVER significant. Trailing zeroes are significant ONLY if the number is a decimal number.(a) $\displaystyle 0.007$
Ans: there is 1 significant figure. Zeroes to the left are never significant.
(b) $\displaystyle 2.64 × 10^{24} \text{ kg} $
Ans: 3 because the value is in scientific notation.
(c) $\displaystyle 0.2370 \text{g cm}^{-3} $
Ans: 4 because the number is decimal number so trailing zeroes are significant.
(d) 6.320 J
Ans: 4 because the number is decimal number so trailing zeroes are significant.
(e) $\displaystyle 6.032 \text{N m}^{-2}$
Ans: 4 because the number in scientific notation is $\displaystyle 6.032 \times 10^0$.
(f) $\displaystyle 0.0006032 \text{m}^2$
Ans: 4 because zeroes to the left are never significant.
