Question 5
SSC-CGL 2018 June 4 Shift 2

The nominal value of an article is 315. It is sold in 288. If this leads to a loss of 4%, then what percentage of the item was marked more than the cost?

  1. 6-1/2
  2. 5
  3. 5-1/2
  4. 8

Solution 1

Use the shortcut to obtain the CP.

CP when loss and SP are known:

$\displaystyle SP \times \frac {100}{100 - \text{loss}\%}$

Hence CP is $\displaystyle 288 \times \frac{100}{100 - 4}$ = Rs. 300

It was marked higher by:

$\displaystyle \frac{315 - 300}{300} \times 100 = 5\%\:\underline{Ans}$

Solution 2

Set up the unitary method.

If SP is 96, CP = 100

If SP is 288, CP = $\displaystyle \frac{100}{96} \times 288$ = 300 Rs.

It was marked higher by

$\displaystyle \frac{315 - 300}{300} \times 100 = 5\%\:\underline{Ans}$
