Question 3.39
NCERT Class XI Chemistry

Considering the elements B, C, N, F, and Si, the correct order of their non-metallic character is?

Solution in Detail
(video solution below this)

The order of F > N > C > B is clear because all belong to the same period 2 and non-metallic character increases as we move towards the right.

Si lies below C in the same group G14 and should be more metallic than carbon because the metallic character increases down a group. Boron lies to the left of C, and it should, too, be more metallic than C!

So the question is: whether Si is more metallic than B, or is it vice-versa? The doubt is about the placement of Si and B.

The size of Si atom is much larger as compared to that of the B atom. So Si should be more metallic than B, even though both are classified as metalloids.

Hence, the order is: F > N > C > B > Si Answer!

[Please note: both B and Si are metalloids]
