Question 3.38
NCERT Class XI Chemistry
Considering the elements B, Al, Mg, and K, the correct order of their metallic character is ?
Solution in Detail
(video solution below this)
K is an alkali metal of group G1 and period P4, whereas Mg is alkaline earth metal of group G2 and period P3. Metallic character decreases from left to right in a period, and increases from top to bottom in a Group. So we can safely say that K > Mg
Al is in the same period 3 as Mg but its group is 13, and metallic character decreases from left to right along a period. Aluminium is located to the right of magnesium, so Mg > Al
B is in the same Group 13 as of Al, but its period is 2. Metallic character increases from top to bottom in a Group. Boron is located just above Al, hence Al > B
Combining, the order is K > Mg > Al > B Answer!
