Question 1.1
NCERT Class XI Chemistry

Calculate the molar mass of the following: (i) H2O (ii) CO2 (iii) CH4

Solution
Ans: 18.02g, 44.01g and 16.043g

Molar Mass = atomic or molecular mass in grams.

atomic mass of H = 1.008u

atomic mass of C = 12.011u

atomic mass of O = 16.00u

(i) Molar Mass of H2O

H20 = (2 x 1.008u) + 16.00u = 18.02u

Hence, molar mass = 18.02 g Ans

(ii) Molar Mass of CO2

CO2 = 12.011u + 2 x 16.00u

Hence, for CO2 = 44.01 grams Ans

(iii) Molar Mass of CH4

CH4 = 12.011u + 4 x 1.008u

Hence, for CH4 = 16.043 grams Ans
