Question 3
SSC-CGL 2019 June 13 Shift 1
An article is sold for Re 288 after successive discounts of 25% and x%. If the marked price of the article is Re 480, what is the value of x?
- 20
- 16
- 15
- 18
Solution in Short
First discount is 25% of 480 = 120. So price after first discount is Re 360. After that SP has been given as 288, so second discount is (360 - 288) = Re. 72. In percentage terms, x = (72/360) x 100 = 20% answer!
Solution in Detail
[1] Marked Price = $\displaystyle 480 \text{ Rs.}$
First discount = $\displaystyle 25\% \text{ of } 480 = 120 \text{ Rs.}$
Price becomes $\displaystyle 480 - 120 = 360 \text{ Rs.}$
[2] Final SP given as $\displaystyle 288 \text{ Rs.}$
$\displaystyle \therefore $ second discount $\displaystyle 360 - 288 = 72 \text{ Rs.}$
This discount is over 360 Rs.
$\displaystyle \implies x = \frac{72}{360} \times 100 = 20\% \:\underline{Ans}$
